An exhibition opening night packed shoulder to shoulder with excited patrons is tremendous. When they’re spilling out onto the streets, it’s even better. The current Gracia Arts Project space located in the center of Barri Gòtic is by no means large, but their vision is. A consistently packed agenda is just one of the reasons they are looking for a more versatile and spacious location in Gràcia to complement their growth and name. The Barcelona-based arts collective operating since 2000 will soon celebrate its gallery’s second anniversary. Not solely focused on fine arts, the scope of member profiles includes photography, design, music, writing, performance and film. A mix of Catalan, Spanish and international artists and influences based, living or working in the Catalan capital help the nonprofit group thrive. Autumn Zimmerman, an extreme art enthusiast, became involved in the project two years ago. Currently based in Barcelona, but born and bred in Canada and the US, she saw it as an opportunity to open up obtainable resources to artists just starting out. She recently helped a member with the funding and resources needed to publish a first book. At the same time, she aided another socio with the completion of a short film project. Exposure for artist members comes widely through the group’s website and blog. They also have the opportunity to exhibit in the gallery space. In addition to exhibitions and monthly meetings, the project offers language, photography, and even meditation classes. A dressed-to-the-nines gala this spring will celebrate their successful second year as well as raise funds for expanding ventures and their new home.
May gala.
