This month I recommend the work of Japanese director Koreeda.

This month I recommend the work of Japanese director Koreeda. Few filmmakers can boast a steady stream of good films which go off without a hitch. This director, who for some is a descendant of the influential and innovative Yasujirō Ozu, adds just the right note of comedy to his dramas without turning them into soap operas.

There is the fantastic After Life, where in purgatory you must decide which moment of your life you want to repeat; or Air Doll, where a life-sized rubber doll owned by a middle-aged man takes on a life of it’s own; the heartbreaking Nobody Knows, on the innocence of childhood and adolescence in situations of trauma; and Still Walking, a mix of a modern-day Tokyo Story (Ozu) and Eat Drink Man Woman (Ang Lee), about a modern Japanese family, which will strike a chord in spite of being set on the other side of the world. For those after a bit of Japanese tradition, there is Hana, the story of a samurai during the Edo period who doesn’t want to avenge the murder of his father; perhaps not Koreeda’s best film, but still very entertaining.

Don’t waste a minute; go out and discover who for many is the best Japanese filmmaker today.
