There is the fantastic After Life, where in purgatory you must decide which moment of your life you want to repeat; or Air Doll, where a life-sized rubber doll owned by a middle-aged man takes on a life of it’s own; the heartbreaking Nobody Knows, on the innocence of childhood and adolescence in situations of trauma; and Still Walking, a mix of a modern-day Tokyo Story (Ozu) and Eat Drink Man Woman (Ang Lee), about a modern Japanese family, which will strike a chord in spite of being set on the other side of the world. For those after a bit of Japanese tradition, there is Hana, the story of a samurai during the Edo period who doesn’t want to avenge the murder of his father; perhaps not Koreeda’s best film, but still very entertaining.
Don’t waste a minute; go out and discover who for many is the best Japanese filmmaker today.
