A beauty craze abroad, Ictioterapia (“fish therapy”), the use of Garra rufa fish to exfoliate the skin, is growing in popularity in Barcelona. The tiny “doctor fish” eat away at dead cells in the outer layer of skin; as they eat, they uncover new, smooth skin, leaving it revitalized and ready to grow back stronger. I tried it out for myself at Belleza Amarama and I highly recommend it.

First, you take off your shoes and put on a pair of rubber pedicure slippers. Then, after your feet are cleaned to remove any bits of fluff from your socks, you submerge them into the fish tank. It’s a strange sensation at first, though not exactly unpleasant. The fish swim around your feet – it feels a bit like a Lush Bath Bomb or a Jacuzzi jet. You share the tank with two other people while the fish set to work removing your dead skin cells. During the half-hour treatment you can have a drink or read a magazine. Once it’s over, your feet are washed again and you’re given a wonderful massage with a cream of your choice. I chose the delicious-smelling OPI Banana Bandana cream. You can also finish off the experience with a complete pedicure, choosing from Chanel, OPI or Essie nail polish.

For the apprehensive among you, you should know that it doesn’t hurt a bit and it doesn’t tickle. It’s also completely hygienic since your feet are washed both before and after. It’s a wonderful, very relaxing experience, and perfect for sharing with someone else. And since you have to sit and essentially do nothing for 30 minutes, it’s a good way to forget about everything and simply enjoy a hot drink and the company of whoever is sitting next to you, while you let yourself be spoiled.
