One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur (2009)

Directed by Curt Worden

One of the founding fathers of the Beat Generation and a literary genius, Jack Keouac's life and fame are unraveled by director Curt Worden. In 1960 Kerouac retreated to the woods in an attempt to flee from his sudden fame and an alcohol-induced depression, writing Big Sur, a semi-autobiography on his beat days in San Francisco and New York. Kerouac's friends and characters from his novels, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn Cassady, Joyce Johnson and Michael McClure talk about the man and maverick who left his mark on the world.

Soul Power (2008)

Directed by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte

September 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire one of the most important events in African/American music history took place. A three-day festival featuring the cream of the US’s soul, funk and Latin music crop, alongside some of Africa’s finest artists, it was timed to coincide with the epic boxing match between Muhammed Ali and George Foreman. The fight was the main focus of the award-winning documentary When We Were Kings, however Soul Power puts together the ‘outtakes’ from the concert, which have been locked away in the vaults for 34 years.

James Brown at the absolute peak of his career, South African singer Miriam Makeba, The Fania All-stars featuring Celia Cruz, Bill Withers, The Crusaders and B.B. King, plus the people of Kinshasa themselves, make this a festival movie to rate along with Wattstax and Woodstock. -The Soul Power pick comes from Roger C, resident DJ and promoter of The Joint Sessions.

  • The Agony and Ecstacy of Phil Spector

The composer of "A Rose in Spanish Harlem" and person that had a hand in creating some of the most incredible rock 'n' roll music of all time: "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Da Do Run Run", producing the Let It Be album, etc.....who many see as 'crazy' is interviewed about the Lana Clarkson murder trial and his career in music. The only problem I had with this documentary was the layering of music critiques over the videos that were shown and the Spanish subtitles bumping into them, it was a bit too much for my eyes and ears to keep up with. But, a very interesting look at the man through his own eyes, and the very high regard he holds himself in, comparing himself to DaVinci and Galileo. It is also sad, as he seems to still not feel accepted by the industry/world, and closes himself off, either by choice or because of force. Great to hear the complete recordings and also get an education on Spector, not to mention see Spector's spot on impressions he does of John Lennon. The director, Vikram Jayanti was in the audience and did a Q&A after (a great feature of the In-Edit festival) and said the only bad time he had with Phil was when he joked about the wigs he wore, to which Spector replied, " what wig? This is my hair" and as Vikram put it, "with Phil, anything that comes out of his mouth is truth", so, with that, take the music genius's words with a grain of salt. One more showing November 6th at 6.15pm, get tickets at Pl. Universitat the day of.

  • Neil Young: Don't Be Denied

I had always thought Young was a bit gruff and a little too Granola for my taste, but actually, the man is much more diverse and interesting, even funnier than I realized. This film looks at the motivations behind his different moves in music and also the press's perceived 'loved em and leave em' pattern Young had with groups like CSNY. Neil is the first to talk about the 'wreckage' he left behind as he 'followed the music'. The interview is filled with peculiar tidbits, like the reason why he drove a hearse, his affection for the Flock of Seagulls and Devo and his relationship with Charles Manson. Additional showings on November 2nd and 4th.
