Luca Guadagnino has emerged as part of a new wave reminiscent of Visconti and Antonioni.

With the noted exceptions of Gomorra and El Divo, it’s been a while since I have been excited by Italian cinema, but Luca Guadagnino has emerged as part of a new wave reminiscent of Visconti and Antonioni. Io Sonno L’amore (I Am Love) leaves a good taste in my mouth, and not just because of the food (one of the characters is a cook who wants to open his own restaurant), but because the film just has all the right ingredients: its photography, direction, music, and characters (especially Tilda Swinton – it is impossible not to fall in love with her in this film) all come together in a portrait of a northern Italian family that is shaken by the death of its patriarch and the collapse of its business. Along with The Prophet, this is the best DVD release of 2010.
