When founder of Stones Throw label, Peanut Butter Wolf, first heard Mayer Hawthorne’s music, he thought he was listening to something from the mid-60s—maybe some lost Tamla Motown recordings. It's amazing to think that such rich soul music can still be made in modern, more cynical times—especially by a white boy from Ann Arbor, Michigan, a boy who not only sings in a beautiful, Smokey Robinson-style voice, but also plays all the instruments on his recordings. Wolf signed Hawthorne after hearing just two songs and his faith has been fully justified with Hawthorne’s excellent debut album A Strange Arrangement.
Praised by BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson and DJ/producer Mark Ronson, Hawthorne even sang live onstage with The Roots in New York. His excellent pop/soul singles: “Just Ain't Gonna Work Out” and “Maybe So, Maybe No”, have earned Mayer a substantial fan base across Europe, which has enabled him to embark on his first tour.
Heavily influenced by such legends as Curtis Mayfield, Issac Hayes, the song writing team of Holland, Dozier & Holland, plus of course the aforementioned Smokey, Mayer Hawthorne will be sure to convince the audience that creating living and breathing soul music, with genuine emotions is doable—even in our age of disposable pop.
