If you like your downtown cocktail bars to be of the moodily low lit and leather-furnished lounge variety, chances are Mix will tick the right boxes. Supplying its services to a chilled and well-turned out professional crowd for what will be five years this January, the Dutch-run bar in the Born is also one of the few remaining places you can go and dance to a live DJ without having to pay at the door.

This is just as well, as the enticing selection of daily market-fresh fruit cocktails is worth saving your euros for – not to mention the gin ‘n’ tonic options – with the house specialty strawberry daiquiri, made with fresh fruit, especially popular. You’re also just as likely to run into some amateur tango and salsa dancers, as Mix has paired up with local Incognito bar providing the “after” to its evening classes.

As is befitting the cool Silvia Prada-designed interior, which uses mirrors, copper lamps and comfy seating to create an intimate yet stylish feel, music at Mix is a deeply soulful groove, with a nightly rotation of DJs enlisted each week to provide the night’s soundtrack, always eclectic, but heavy on funk, soul, latin and jazz sounds. The bar has also hosted a series of live shows too, such as free jazz and soul performance night BsouL and has even welcomed the guitarist for pop-legend Prince through its doors. Like sister locales Kharma and Zahara, Mix also markets itself as a party venue and its on-site kitchen and services can be easily adapted to cater for special group requests.
