Barcelona, and Spain's first free film festival fighting to educate the greater public on intersex and transgender issues Carey Zamarriego

Barcelona, and Spain’s first free film festival is fighting to educate the greater public on just what it means to be transgender or intersex. Mery, from the group Acció Trans-Intersex of Barcelona, the organizers of the festival, describes the org effort as, “a refreshing umbrella for activists that facilitates change and growth, and additionally helps those fighting an exhaustive battle recharge their batteries.” After all, the members of these two groups are often marginalized and victims of prejudice.

First, here’s an abbreviated tutorial on the two groups participating in the film festival. Transgender describes someone who identifies with a gender other than the one they were born with. It is also a term frequently used as a catchall for transsexuals who are preparing for sex change operations. Intersex on the other hand, is a physical condition and refers to anyone who was born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit traditional descriptions.

Mostra’ns came out of an idea to break down stereotypes and stigmas attached to being a member of these groups. Yes, there are area festivals for the LGBT crowd, but something needed to be done to shine a special light on the transgender and intersex crowd.

The festival will include workshops, film screenings and parties. Monday, June 22nd at Golferichs gay rights activist and director, Elliat Graney- Saucke along with Col Cruise from mostra’ns London, will give a workshop about transgender activism in the audiovisual world. Elliat’s provocative documentary Travel Queeries will also be shown during the festival.

All of the films, including shorts and feature-length flicks, will be presented at the Cines Casablanca- Kaplan. The whole festa will come to a resounding bang at the closing party Friday, June 26th at 12am at CSO La Astilla with live performances, a DJ, VJ and much more. Everything is free of charge. All you have to do is turn up with an open mind, and heart.
