In the era of Internet and the midst of an economic crisis, starting up a bookshop or an art gallery is a risky and daunting task, so hats off to the founders of Mutt who had the courage to do both at once. Opened last December in IguapopGallery’s old space on Comerç street, Mutt provides both an excellent range of beautiful books and exciting exhibitions of contemporary art.

Specializing in graphic design, architecture, photography, fashion, illustration, street art, product design, contemporary art and more, the store aims to introduce up-and-coming or little-known artists and designers to a public who may not have come across them otherwise. The store also sells various magazines and international indie fanzines and a small selection of contemporary literature, all hand-picked to fit with its style and ethos. With clear white walls and a minimalist approach to decor, the bright, airy space provides a calm atmosphere in which shoppers can browse the range of gorgeous titles, view the gallery’s newest exhibitions and enjoy a playlist of tunes as carefully chosen as the artworks that hang on the walls or lie piled up on the tables.

Until March 27, Mutt hosts an exposition of Japanese artist Sosaku Miyazaki’s exhibit NewIsTheNewOld. Moving among different styles and moods and influenced by both pop and traditional cultures, Miyazaki’s body of work includes everything from brightly colored collages of magazine scraps, delicate hand drawings of machinery and retro toys, childlike interpretations of people in their home environments and much more. With a style that is always evolving and never limited to one media, this solo exhibition is a rare chance to see the work of this immensely talented and versatile artist firsthand.
