In 2006, NYC’s hallowed hall for opera, the Metropolitan Opera, began broadcasting its performances on TV. Shortly after, these showings moved to movie marquees, taking the high society art form out of gala ensembles and into the dressed down, cushiony seats of cinemas, complete with sinfully buttered popcorn. Other opera houses and movie companies in Europe started following this trend. This December at Cinesa cinemas in Barcelona, including Diagonal Mar, La Maquinista and Diagonal, moviegoers can catch the world’s finest sopranos performing arias. See Carmen, Bizet’s passionate piece broadcast direct from Milan’s La Scala on the 7th and Verdi’s Il Trovatore live from the Gran Teatre del Liceu on the 22nd.
