If the Born's “Fashion Quarter” status wasn’t already crystallized, the entrance of Paco Rueda Shop is sure to have done the trick. Poppy Beale-Collins

The Born is a neighborhood known for its high quota of boutiques per square meter. Its association with fashion’s sleeker side is nothing new, and the streets snaking round Passeig del Born are home to many an independent designer and outlet. But if its “Fashion Quarter” status wasn’t already crystallized, or was in need of a little boost, the entrance of both ex-Raval vintage favorite Le Swing and now Paco Rueda Shop is sure to have done the trick.

One of the last remaining independent shops to desert the ever expanding tourist sprawl of Calle Ferran, Paco Rueda’s migration to the more luxe, grown-up Born is also a kind of symbolic leaving the family home for owner and designer Luis, whose parents first opened the shop 28 years ago. Since taking over, Luis says he has spent the last eight years “slowly but surely” rebranding Paco Rueda into what’s no doubt one of the most respected and forward thinking clothes shops in town, known internationally for stocking European brands scarcely found in Spain, let alone Barcelona, such as Henrik Vibskov, Wood Wood, Ally Capellino, and Opening Ceremony.

The new look Paco has just set up camps on the leafy, much more tranquila Passeig de Picasso, and inside is a candy pink and yellow striped walled haven of carefully arranged, quality European design, from practical utilitarian classics – canvas bags, neatly pressed summer shorts, white plimsoles – to the more “statement piece” – leggings lined with multi-colored fringing and seven-inch red leather heels, with brands FOLK and A.P.C. the latest additions to the rails. Paco’s style is both wearable and affordable, but if your summer wardrobe budget was already blown before you even made it to the beach, there’s always next season. We are told they’re “planning some surprises for winter…”
