Meetings for architecture and design networking, giving presenters six-minutes and 40-seconds to express themselves. Carey Zamarriego

In 2003, the creators of Pecha Kucha (meaning ‘chatter’ in Japanese) devised a format for architecture and design networking nights that prohibits presenters from going off on tangents. Developed by two architects based in Tokyo, a Brit by the name of Mark Dytham and an Italian-German, Astrid Klein, Pecha Kucha meetings have a casual vibe, but a strict formula: presenters get up, say their piece and then have a seat, and a beer if they fancy.

PK nights give each presenter a six-minute, 40-second window to present his or her idea. Presenters are allowed only 20 slides with a 20-second briefing each. The idea has caught on since its founding and now Pecha Kucha nights are organized around the world. Barcelona’s edition is run by Petz Scholtus—the goddess of all things green, who is currently selling cork bulletin boards, with part of the proceeds going to a non-profit organization fighting desertification worldwide. The BCN June date will find 12 creative, multidisciplinary speakers presenting, along with Estrella Damms and soft drinks at €1 each (sign-up required to attend).
