On a rare occasion a place seems to come out of nowhere to capture the imagination of the city. This would be the story of Picnic, a casually chic restaurant near Parc de la Ciutadella which turns one this month and has already appeared in Vogue, Elle, The Times and El País, among others.

Many Barcelona establishments have tried and failed to perfect the American brunch, but here Picnic has succeeded, arguably earning the title for Barcelona’s best brunch, available weekends from 12pm to 5pm. Co-founder Andrew notes that on weekends, “People want a big plate of Eggs Benedict and a good Bloody Mary for their hangover.” No argument here.

But Picnic has quite a bit more to offer than just brunch. The menu is made up of selected dishes divided into vegetarian, fish, meat and desserts areas. This elegant simplicity is what best sums up Picnic, which manages to present every detail – from the antique decor to the beautifully elaborated dishes – with a casual yet simple sophistication that belies the intense care that goes into its creation.

Picnic was born nearly two years ago when Andrew, native to Australia, decided to bring his hospitality expertise to Europe and met partner Jaime, a Chilean chef with Italian roots, and Tara, an American marketing professional. Popular dishes from Picnic’s seasonal menu reflect this diverse, international background and include “Fried Green Tomatoes, Feta Cheese, Fresh Corn Salsa,” “Grilled Scallops, Zafran Wheat, Sour Cream” and “Grilled Kangaroo, Green Relish, Cilantro Falafel.” Dishes are inexpensive, generally €6 to €9 each, and a lunch menu for €12.50 is available during the week.

Cocktails are a specialty, with an excellent (and suitably spicy) Bloody Mary, as well as custom cocktails like “Sweet Ginger Gin,” made with ginger, cucumber and homemade lemonade. Tempting enough to have one too many – and to give you a good reason to return the next morning.

    PICNIC. Mon 1pm–4pm, Tue–Sat 1pm–4pm and 8pm–12am, Sun 12pm–5pm, bar until 2am. C/ Comerç, 1 (Born). Tel 93 511 66 61.
