His earlier works expressed a fascination with language, in which he painted phrases and images side-by-side on the canvas. While the visual and literary obsession would remain, he quickly found the technique of communicating this through painting to be unfulfilling. Quite like Andy Warhol, Baldessari believed that using existing images in a more straightforward style would keep viewers focused on his message. This revelation led him to burn most of his works in the Cremation Project, and start a fresh, new career using simple typography with a mixture of photo images and film to project a given statement. MACBA’s Pure Beauty includes over 130 Baldessari works and is the largest retrospective of the artist’s work in Spain to date.
