When asked what must be accomplished before death, Cuban revolutionary leader José Martí responded, “Plant a tree, write a book, have a son.” Following the advice of a wise man, Catalan author Ivan Torras Comas has not only written one book, but eleven and combined them into a literary masterpiece. The collection, La Muerta es un Divertimento y otros Engaños (Death is Amusing and Other Deceits), takes subjects like death and fills them with dark humor. The books within the book, like El Amor, esa Pesadilla (Love is a Nightmare), bring readers into a satirical world similar to that of Vladimir Nabokov, finding laughter in the dark. Not only has Ivan managed to write a book before his death, he has written one about it in the most light-hearted way possible.
