There are some great tonic brands on the market, such as Fever-Tree, which uses the essence from the African tree (a species of acacia which also contains quinine) for which it is named and 1724, which incorporates natural quinine from trees found on the Peruvian Inca Trail. Then there is Fentimans, a London tonic with an irresistible citrus base, Boylan, with its perfect ratio of carbonated water and sugar and Q Tonic, which has become one of the top tonics ordered by connoisseurs. And we mustn’t forget Schweppes and Nordic Mist, the world-wide bar staples.
In Barcelona, the Adrià brothers recently inaugurated 41º (reservation required) - or the Negroni cocktail bar can be counted on to serve up the most creative, quality gin ‘n’ tonics. Try experimenting with extra ingredients such as grapes, cucumber, basil, rosemary, parsley, pink or white grapefruit, liquorice and of course lemon, the old classic which will always be associated with this legendary cocktail which continues to reinvent itself.
