A video art festival like no other, it uses the buildings of picturesque Cadaques to display works in a one-of-a-kind way. Tracy Gilbert

Imagine an open-air projection of light and sound under a full moon sky by the sea, where a functioning lighthouse is the base instrument of an audiovisual installation. The luminous display uses capsules exposed to the wind, aquatic microphones, and music to combine the four classical elements of earth, water, air and fire. This was just one of many unique displays at last year’s Tramuntana video art festival in Cadaques. The theme that mixed artistic works with natural elements in the festival’s second edition will be hard to surpass. However, this is something the organizers have taken in stride. For 2009, the focus turns to magnetism. Breaking down this topic of attraction and electrical charge, Cadaques and its surroundings will provide an original stage for the projections, live performances and installations. The displays come from a sea of experimental international artists. A synergy of technology and nature, art and artist, sound and spectator, this festival should not be missed.
