THE MAN WHO LOVED WOMEN
Celebrate the birthday month of applauded French director François Truffaut with a view of his ‘77 flick putting a twist on the male midlife crisis. While it may seem this older man gets off at seducing any young thing that passes by in a skirt, in reality he is neither handsome nor smooth, and simply a man in love with love.
L'ARGENT DE POCHE
A beautifully sublime Truffaut film from ‘76 about childhood. Unlike his The 400 Blows, Small Change develops without the heavy drama. Truffaut takes us back to that incredible time in life when children are filled with hope and innocence, something adults tend to ignore or forget all together.
LA PEAU DOUCE
Truffaut pays homage to the master of suspense, Hitchcock with this 1960s adultery thriller. The Smooth Skin belongs to the stunning Françoise Dorléac, Catherine Deneuve’s sister. A talented actress, Dorléac died suddenly in a car crash just a few years after the film release. She was also the protagonist in Polanski’s Cul de Sac.
JULES ET JIM
This Truffaut work embraces the Nouvelle Vague French film movement happening at the end of the 50s. A shift towards more liberal storytelling, Jules and Jimrecounts a risky ménage à trois in which the limits of love and friendship are tested. It is a brilliantly captured black and white flick, and an essential for any French cinema buff.
