You’ll marvel as your fork glides through rich, mouth-coating chocolate gateaux, a convincing “cheese” cake or an individual, elaborate restaurant-style dessert.

Vegan Bakery

C/ Allada Vermell 19, Barcelona

Eggs, butter, milk, cream – essential ingredients for the science of baking. Remove one or all of these elements however, and that culinary art suddenly becomes immensely more challenging. The people behind the Vegan Bakery, the only one of its kind in Spain, have risen to the challenge and seem to have cracked the formula, turning traditional baking on its head. Conscious of the dietary or lifestyle needs of cake lovers everywhere, they have devised an impressive range to fulfill the gap other bakeries don’t meet.

It’s impossible to go far these days without tripping over a cupcake, yet the Vegan Bakery doesn’t limit itself to a mountain of vegan frosting. As you sit at their main outlet in the Born’s historic plaza on Allada Vermell you’ll marvel as your fork glides through rich, mouth-coating chocolate gateaux, a convincing “cheese” cake or an individual, elaborate restaurant-style dessert. Or you’ll dust off crumbs from a flaky pastry or wipe a dollop of “cream” off your nose from those ubiquitous cupcakes. Large, special occasion cakes are also available to order. Across town in Pedralbes, the Mandoni café also stock their goods.

Amazingly, none of this contains a drop of milk, the crack of an egg or even gluten and everything is 100% free of animal products. Even those with a savory palate can indulge with a range of burgers packed with mushrooms, tofu or seitan to replace the meat. If you have the somewhat demanding task of catering a party for vegetarians, vegans or those with certain food intolerances, then the vegan bakery can also provide the solution; just contact them with your requirements and they’ll tailor their menu to your needs. Yet this is not a paradise solely for those with a restricted diet, but well worth a visit to challenge your preconceptions about vegan food and new ways with baking.
