From a very young age, José, co-owner of La Pineda and self-proclaimed Butifarra Appreciation Society (aka ButiClub) mac daddy, developed an obsession with what he calls the “just a little bit” of life – those special moments and short-lived discrepancies that complete our woven histories.

His greatest moment by far is “La Hora del Vermut.” For those of you unfamiliar with this time, it, much like twilight, recurs every day and tints the sky a reddish brown color, depending on the amount of alcohol you’ve consumed. Taking place between the hours of twelve and two it consists in the snacking of butifarras (black, white and egg), the munching of anchoas de l’Escala and the sipping of icy vermut laced with an orange bite.

For our readers only, José shares the secrets to the perfect vermut:

    1. Intensify the mood

Vermut not only stimulates the pre-lunch appetite, but also impulses the libido. For this reason, it is always best to keep a Viagra in your pocket for those sticky life moments.

    2. Keep it dirty

Serve vermut “warm” on ice. Never use fancy glasses; tumblers shared with friends and scattered with life’s grimy debris are always best.

    3. Serve your master

Although friendly on most days, this seemingly innocuous drink can sometimes bite back in what is known as vermut attack. For this reason, be prepared for bruised knees and scrappy waistcoats.
