Originally a radio producer in the States, Dave Bianchi has created a space for global collaboration in Barcelona with his studio and label, Whatabout Music. While the label has produced over 20 bands and 40 releases, Bianchi isn’t shy about admitting that the Catalan capital didn’t always spark his imagination.

“As I came above ground in Plaça Catalunya for the first time, I was surprisingly underwhelmed,” he says, continuing, “Sure, it’s charming, busy with life, and screaming with culture, but I didn’t instantly fall in love.” Yet Barcelona became the spot where Bianchi discovered influences from places like Argentina and Israel, and after some great word-of-mouth, artists started coming to him from around the world.

Since opening in 2006, Whatabout Music has produced a great mix of artists, including alternative indie group Bannister Ride and “aquatic” music artists Selva de Mar, as well as Bianchi’s own work, most recently his album The Suburbs of Salt. As for the future? Bianchi believes in the growth of direct music distribution to the public (via mediums like the Internet) and places his faith in the musicians who visit his studio. “The future depends on the artists I encounter in the coming years. We’ve had over 200,000 downloads, and it only seems to be growing.”
