“As I came above ground in Plaça Catalunya for the first time, I was surprisingly underwhelmed,” he says, continuing, “Sure, it’s charming, busy with life, and screaming with culture, but I didn’t instantly fall in love.” Yet Barcelona became the spot where Bianchi discovered influences from places like Argentina and Israel, and after some great word-of-mouth, artists started coming to him from around the world.
Since opening in 2006, Whatabout Music has produced a great mix of artists, including alternative indie group Bannister Ride and “aquatic” music artists Selva de Mar, as well as Bianchi’s own work, most recently his album The Suburbs of Salt. As for the future? Bianchi believes in the growth of direct music distribution to the public (via mediums like the Internet) and places his faith in the musicians who visit his studio. “The future depends on the artists I encounter in the coming years. We’ve had over 200,000 downloads, and it only seems to be growing.”
