Can Recasens

By Ferenz Jacobs

can recasens

When in Barcelona, do as the Barcelonians. This means avoid the crowded Ramblas and, to experience a small-town feel, head to the Rambla del Poblenou.

This pleasant boulevard runs from Gran Via to the beach. On your way, you’ll pass Modernista façades and numerous terraces inviting you in for a cool beer. At number 102, the five generations of the Recasens family have been providing the neighborhood with food since 1906, first as a butcher’s shop and now as a delicatessen and restaurant.

Can Recasens greets you with the smell of cheese and cured meats. The friendly staff will find you a table in one of the intimate, dimly lit rooms. But before ordering one of their delicious torrades (toasted bread with toppings), abundant fustes (cheese platters) or lush salads, have a look around. Pumpkins, apples and tomatoes lay and hang everywhere.

You have entered Barcelona’s horn of plenty.
